子曰：
舜其大知也與！舜好問以好察邇言。
隱惡而揚善。
執其兩端，用其中於民。
其斯以為舜乎！
1. Nabi bersabda, “ Adapun yang menyebabkan Raja Shun itu besar bijaksananya ialah: ia suka bertanya dan meneliti kata-kata yang sederhana sekalipun. Yang buruk disembunyikan dan yang baik diluaskan. Dengan berpegang pada kedua ujung ekstremnya, secara moderat dilaksanakan pada rakyatnya. Demikianlah sebabnya ia terkenal sebagai Raja Shun.
The Master said, "There was Shun:– He indeed was greatly wise! Shun loved to question others, and to study their words, though they might be shallow. He concealed what was bad in them and displayed what was good. He took hold of their two extremes, determined the Mean, and employed it in his government of the people. It was by this that he was Shun!"[Legge]
Confucius said: "(Emperor) Shun was so wise! He liked to question people and delighted in listening to everyday speech. He would cover people's bad points and disclose their goodness. He snatched up their excesses and facilitated their balanced nature for the benefit of all. It was in this way that Shun made himself into what he was."[C. Muller]
孔子说：“舜可算是顶聪明的人吧！他喜欢请教别人，而且喜欢体察平常人浅近的话语；他隐瞒别人的坏处，宣扬别人的好处，抓住大家议论肿过分和不及这两个极端正，调和起来采用中道，施行于百姓，这就是舜之所以为舜吧！”[白话翻译]
